was recorded at the main hall (Stage A) of Synchron Stage Vienna.
Especially when competing with orchestras,
the D-274 impresses with its tremendous assertive sonic volume and power –
which is not surprising considering its soundboard of almost two square meters (21.5 sq.ft.).​

The beautifully refurbished instrument is equipped with Blüthner’s patented Aliquot system
that uses additional resonating strings in the treble register,
resulting in a lyrical, warm and rich sound with lots of overtones.
The Blüthner lends itself extremely well to song accompaniments and chamber music settings,
as well as to pop songs and ballads.​

was captured with a multi-microphone setup at Synchron Stage Vienna’s Stage B.​

The Fourth Pedal
The F308 at Synchron Stage Vienna is equipped with a fourth pedal invented by Fazioli,
located to the left of the three traditional pedals,
which lowers the keyboard and raises the hammers to be closer to the strings.
The effect is a decrease in volume of the sound without changing its timbre,
sounding the same overtones and resonances,
with a soft but very clear and transparent sound.
This innovation also facilitates playing soft glissandos, rapid passages, and legatos.
What’s more, by combining the una corda pedal with the fourth pedal
pianists can increase the variations of soft colors the F308 is able to offer.​

As with all Synchron Libraries, you can mix your piano sound in stereo,
5.1 surround or even Dolby Atmos and 9.1 Auro 3D,

In addition to creating your sound by mixing several microphone signals,
the free Vienna Synchron Pianos software offers multiple options
for shaping the sound of the piano and your playing experience.
Hosting a high-performance playback engine,
the software provides a full-blown mixer with a broad range of effects
such as EQ, compressor, saturator, algorithmic reverb, delay, chorus, flanger, rotary, and many more.
You may also adjust the volume of body resonances, sympathetic strings,
and pedal noises right in the main Play window.
In the Edit window you can even tweak EQ,
volume, tuning, dynamic range, etc. for each individual key!​

Sampling Precision
To capture the sound of the instrument with all its subtleties,
our engineers deployed a highly precise motion-control system
based on a solenoid that controls a noise-free “robot finger”.
The micro-controller moves the finger with super-human precision,
providing flexible curvatures for down-strokes and release movements,
the latter corresponding with the preceding note length and various release speeds.​

The Bösendorfer Concert Grand 290 Imperial represents the apex of the famed Austrian piano manufacturer’s precious heritage.
Its nine additional sub-bass notes extend the instrument’s key range downward to the low C –
for a total range of eight octaves.
The extra bass strings create additional harmonic resonance with every key you strike,
providing warmth, richness and depth across the entire instrument.
The massive soundboard projects an unusually broad frequency range,
evoking a sonorous, orchestral timbre.​

The Imperial’s magically unfolding tonal character,
especially apparent in the pianissimo to mezzoforte range,
was meticulously sampled in finely calibrated velocity steps
using our proprietary piano robot that we’ve further developed and perfected.
To guarantee a consistent sound over all keys, velocities and note lengths,
the total recording production time was scheduled as tightly as possible
to minimize even the smallest changes in the instrument’s sonic behavior.
A sufficient block of time was reserved at the Synchron Stage,
but after recording nearly 24 hours a day it still took several weeks
to capture the 290 Imperial in its entirety.​

our engineers developed a highly precise motion-control system based on a solenoid
that controls a noise-free “robot finger”.
The micro-controller moves the finger with super-human precision,
providing flexible curvatures for down-strokes and release movements.
The MIDI controlled system delivers more than 100 velocities and various release samples,
depending on the preceding note length and various release speeds.​

Utmost Precision and Consistency
As evidenced by the huge amount of sample data,
the recording phase of this Yamaha CFX grand piano project extended over several months,
which demanded absolute consistency within the room and for the instrument itself.
To protect the piano’s environment and ensure reliable recordings,
Synchron Stage Vienna’s integrated system for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC)
provided very consistent climatic conditions throughout the entire recording process.
Further, all samples were recorded using the instrument’s integrated,
computer controlled performance reproducing system.

meticulously sampled at our Synchron Stage Vienna.
Unlike its big brother F308 that was captured in the grandeur of Stage A,
the F212 was recorded in the smaller, dryer Stage B,
which turned out to be the perfect match for Fazioli’s classic mid-sized piano.
In this intimate setting, with more direct signals and less room sound,
every nuance of its rich sound shines,
from the powerful bass to the warm mid-range to the crisp upper registers.​

As with the C. Bechstein upright piano that is available as the German Upright 1904,
this Fazioli F212 is owned by pianist and film composer Mick Baumeister,
co-creator of the Hornberg breath controller.
Mick acquired this Fazioli 212 after some intense testing at Piano Fischer in Stuttgart
as a birthday present to himself in 1998.​

and was looking for a well-balanced piano with a nicely rounded bass
that would fit his recording room.
After a few days of testing,
the F212 won his heart with its intimate yet powerful sound.​

There was only one thing holding him back, and that was the feeling of one specific octave.
After tweaking the intonation of certain notes didn’t help,
Mr. Paolo Fazioli himself made the trip to Stuttgart and brought with him a brand-new hammer-row

with beautifully rounded tones across the keyboard spectrum.​

In addition to creating your sound by mixing several microphone signals,
the free Vienna Synchron Pianos software offers multiple options
for shaping the sound of the piano and your playing experience.
Hosting a high-performance playback engine,
the software provides a full-blown mixer with a broad range of effects
such as EQ, compressor, saturator, algorithmic reverb,
delay, chorus, flanger, rotary, and many more.
You may also adjust the volume of body resonances, sympathetic strings,
and pedal noises right in the main Play window.
In the Edit window you can even tweak EQ, volume, tuning,
dynamic range, etc. for each individual key!​

our engineers deployed a highly precise motion-control system
based on a solenoid that controls a noise-free “robot finger”.
The micro-controller moves the finger with super-human precision,
providing flexible curvatures for down-strokes and release movements,

The Bösendorfer 280VC was recorded at Synchron Stage Vienna’s Stage B, a 69 m² (739 sq ft.) live room
offering a beautifully controlled acoustic environment
with less ambience than the large main hall.
Hence the sound of the 280VC is more intimate
and direct than the Stage A recordings of the Bösendorfer Imperial,
with ample body and fullness, making it a very genre-versatile piano
that’s easy to control and fun to play.​

our engineers further refined our precise motion-control system

This exceptional grand piano was built in 1895
by the famous Julius Blüthner Pianofortefabrik of Leipzig.
It was acquired by Synchron Stage Vienna after having been lovingly restored
by master piano builder Bernhard Balas from Vienna.​

The 193 cm professional scale instrument is equipped
with Blüthner’s specially developed and patented Aliquot system
that uses additional dampened strings positioned above the conventional strings of the treble register,
which are not struck by the hammers but resonate sympathetically.
This fourth set of strings enhances the overtones, providing a velvety,
organic shimmer and giving the instrument a particularly lyrical “singing” quality.

In addition, the strings are unusually long and thin,
stretched to an enormous string tension of 20 tons,
which helps define the instrument’s specific sound.
In combination with its soft hammers the Blüthner grand produces a clear,
yet warm and soft timbre that is superior to many modern instruments in its variety of tonal colors.​

Famously, Paul McCartney played a Blüthner concert grand when recording “Let It Be”
for the film of the same title in 1969.​

Capturing the Golden Tone
Vienna Symphonic Library’s Blüthner 1895 grand piano was recorded at Stage B of Synchron Stage Vienna.
This beautiful 69 m² (739 sq ft.) live room with a 3.5 to 4.5 m (11.5 – 14.75 ft) height
features a controlled acoustic environment
with less ambience than the large main hall (Stage A).​

While beautifully restored, this Blüthner 1895 was recorded “as is”,
with all the charm and peculiarities that give a seasoned instrument its character.
Its virtual recreation is extremely versatile

The Blüthner lends itself extremely well to song accompaniments and chamber music settings,
as well as to pop songs and ballads where other concert grands sound too large and obtrusive.
Presets like “Intimate” or “Vintage” bring out this special quality even more.​

Sampling Precision
To capture the Blüthner 1895 with all its subtleties,
our engineers developed a highly precise motion-control system based on a solenoid
that controls a noise-free “robot finger”.
The micro-controller moves the finger with super-human precision,
providing flexible curvatures for down-strokes and release movements,
the latter corresponding with the preceding note length and various release speeds.

Viennese Tradition of Piano Making
The Bösendorfer Grand Upright 130 incorporates the experience
of almost two centuries of grand piano making.
Although physically an upright piano,
the instrument surprises with subtle nuances and a powerful bass,
and yet with a pure and pristine piano sound,
without further tonal colors that are usually added by the large body of a concert grand.​

The legendary pure and rich Bösendorfer sound
is based on the Viennese tradition of piano making with its complex construction.
Bösendorfer uses more than 80% naturally dried resonant spruce wood
to build an instrument – more than any other manufacturer.
When a note is played, the integrated spruce components become acoustically active,
forming a complete resonating body similar in principle to a violin.
Its precise mechanics offer optimum power transmission with maximum controllability.
The carefully hand-spun bass strings – steel core strings with one or two layers of copper –
also contribute to its warm and sonorous sound.​

This C. Bechstein upright piano was built in Berlin Kreuzberg in the early 20th century.
Its distinctive vintage character, owing to its generous proportion of resonating wood,
was captured with a multi-microphone setup at Synchron Stage Vienna’s Stage B.​

The upright’s very smooth action allows the finest gradations from pianissimo to fortissimo.
In the main playing range its sound is more reminiscent of a small concert grand than of an upright piano.
With its clear and accurate tonal development it conveys the intimate atmosphere of a small concert hall.
The instrument’s mid range is very pronounced and focused,
while its ageless character clearly asserts itself in all registers.​

Brought to Stuttgart by pianoforte maker and dealer B. Klinkerfuss,
Württemberg’s sole representative for C. Bechstein and J. Blüthner,
the instrument has always been in residence with families in the Stuttgart area.
It was played by pianist and film composer Mick Baumeister,
co-creator of the Hornberg breath controller, at different stages of his life.
The upright was owned by Martin Friz who taught a young Mick improvisation on this instrument.
Decades later, Mick purchased the piano from German actor Holger Daemgen’s family,
and – as he puts it – it never ceases to inspire him and to find “the truth”.​

Customize Your Personal Sound
The German Upright 1904 comes with the free Vienna Synchron Pianos software
that offers multiple options for shaping your sound and your playing experience.
In addition to the multitude of options from mixing various microphone signals,
the player provides a full-blown mixer with a broad range of effects,
such as EQ, compressor, saturator, algorithmic reverb, delay,
chorus, flanger, rotary, and many more.
You may also adjust the volume of body resonances,
sympathetic strings and pedal noises right in the main Play window.
In the Edit window you can even tweak EQ, volume, tuning, dynamic range,
and more for each individual key.​

Sampling Precision
To capture the sound of the instrument with all its subtleties,
our engineers deployed a highly precise motion-control system based on a solenoid
that controls a noise-free “robot finger”.
The micro-controller moves the finger with super-human precision,
providing flexible curvatures for down-strokes and release movements,
the latter corresponding with the preceding note length and various release speeds.​
