Since its renovation and reopening in 2016,
Synchron Stage Vienna has already hosted a wealth of music recordings for international film and TV productions
(such as Inferno, The Crown, Lego Batman, Ghost in the Shell, The Meg, Blue Planet II),
in addition to video games, commercials, and classical recordings, with many more to come.
The acoustics of the 540 m² (5,813 sq.ft.) main hall are characterized by a lush and warm sound
with an average reverb time of 1.8 seconds,
while still providing excellent localization of all sound sources,
both in depth and in the stereo or surround environment.​

Multiple Microphone Positions
To capture the spectacular ambience of the Synchron Stage,
our engineers employed eight separate phase-coherent microphone configurations, recorded simultaneously,
to provide a broad range of room options while using the library.
Any or all of these setups can be mixed to dial in just the sound you’re looking for,
from close and focused, to broad and epic!​

8 Velocity Layers, 80 Variations per Key
One major reason for the heightened realism of Synchron Strings I
is the unprecedented number of velocity layers and note variations.
Most notes are available with 8 dynamic levels and up to 10 variations,
from pianissimo to fortissimo and everything in between,
that blend smoothly as you crossfade through the layers.
All the samples are delivered automatically as you play,
and in most cases you don’t even need to think about manual key switching.​

We’ve developed a new sampling process wherein all performances are recorded and edited at “fixed gain”.
The result is that all pitches, dynamic layers, articulations
and instruments match 100% perfectly with each other.
For example, a pianissimo articulation of an ensemble sounds exactly as it was played at Synchron Stage
and painstakingly matches the pianissimo performances of all the other instruments.​

Long notes
The magic of string ensembles is in the way expert musicians perform note beginnings and releases,
and that’s exactly what we captured with long notes,
legatos and portamentos of Synchron Strings Pro.
The library provides all of the originally played attack and release variants,
which are easy to use due to their consistent layout throughout the library.
Dial in a marcato attack, a soft attack, or an even softer crescendo –
you’ll hear what the musicians performed
without having to shape a tone using MIDI controllers.
The same goes for espressivo notes where the originally played phrasings exhibit a natural quality
that is inherently different from MIDI manipulated notes.​

More Articulations
Synchron Strings Pro includes a few articulations from Synchron Strings I
(staccatos, legatos senza and molto vibrato, long notes, flautandos, etc.),
but most articulations are new recordings.
The short notes category includes new spiccatos
(shorter, more pointed variants to the staccatos),
“bold” staccatos (for slower tempos) and “agile” staccatos (for faster tempos),
as well as detachés that can be played as originally recorded or shorter,
thanks to the Synchron Player’s evolved release trigger technology.​

Ponticello (staccatos, sustains, legatos, tremolos),
col legno and harmonics round out the rich palette of included playing techniques.​

Synchron Strings Pro not only offers individual presets of each of the five ensembles,
but also tutti mappings and octave combinations
that provide the entire articulation structure of the ensembles, all with polyphonic legato.
Tutti presets feature the original voicing stacked over a six octave span,
and condensed voicing over a four octave span.
With octave combinations you get two ensembles each playing in octaves,
such as first and second violins, violas and cellos, or cellos and basses, etc.​

recorded simultaneously, to provide a broad range of room options while using the library.

The main surround microphone settings may also be used instead of the main stereo room mics
in order to achieve a wider and more ambient mix.
Blending surround signals with the other microphone signals creates a denser,
more lush overall sound, even in stereo applications.​

Coherent Performances
As with Synchron Strings Pro, our main approach was to let the musicians play cleverly devised scores,
very often for more than half an hour,
to capture all their musicality and mastery of real-life performances as a coherent source of sampled articulations.
The captured variants of expression derived from these authentic performances
enable you to seamlessly combine different playing techniques and nuances,
such as various note beginnings, arcs and releases of notes,
into one coherent piece of expressive music.​

Short Articulations
Like the larger ensembles of Synchron Strings Pro,
Synchron Elite Strings offers regular and short staccatos as well as spiccatos
(very short notes sounded by throwing the bow onto the strings),
in both bold and agile variants – the latter being shorter and therefore perfect for quicker passages.
What’s more, the small string ensembles offer new variants of one-second détachés –
including soft attacks leading into expressive vibrato, and normal attacks with a slight fade.
The full potential of these détachés comes to fruition
by combining both articulations according to the musical context.
Other short playing techniques include pizzicato, snap pizzicato,
and hitting the strings with the bow (col legno and battuto).​

Long and Interval Articulations
All long notes, legatos and portamentos offer three vibrato variants (regular, molto, sans),
four different starts (soft, regular, fast, marcato/sfz) as well as regular and soft releases.
With legatos and portamentos, the different note-start variants apply only to the first notes of the phrases,
while the following notes feature a smooth legato or portamento connection.​

A very special addition are the Performance Détaché articulations,
a first for libraries recorded at Synchron Stage.
As with legatos, we recorded intervals of up to an octave,

These separate notes are still connected by the Synchron Player’s algorithms,
for very realistic phrases that differ from passages performed with single note détachés.
What’s more, tremolos, measured tremolos and trills also offer legato variants for fluid note transitions.​

The whole step-half step (or “diminished”) scale was first found in 20th century music,
particularly in the music of Béla Bartók, Alexander Skrjabin and Olivier Messiaen, e.g.,
in his magnum opus, the “Turangalîla” symphony.
Messiaen described this scale as the second mode of his seven “modes with limited transpositions”,
as it can only be transposed three times
(the fourth transposition would already be a repetition).
Apart from the above-mentioned composers,
the scale is frequently used in Jazz music.​
